4-11 Partition Window

This section explains the information collected and shown about primary partitioned files.

4-11-1 Overview

A partitioned file is a file that resides on multiple volumes. A file can span up to 16 volumes.
Moreover, the disk volumes can be connected to the same or different controllers, on the same or
different processing modules, or can even span multiple systems. To the user the file seems
contiguous. The obvious reason for partitioning a file is to acquire more disk space for a file that
does not fit on one disk volume. Partitioning files, however, can also improve application
performance by taking advantage of parallelism. For relative and entry-sequenced files, the
application uses the primary partition until it is full, and then starts to fill up the first extra partition,
and so on. For key-sequenced files, you assign partial key values to each partition when the file is
created; for example, the first partition might contain keys A through J, the second partition keys K
through Q, and the third partition keys R through Z.

NonStop Storage Analyzer displays information about the partitioned files and allows users to create
graphs that would help in analyzing their trend over a period of time.

4-11-2 Description

Clicking on a “Partition Files.” value in the Central Display at the Node level brings the File List
Window displaying the primary partitioned Enscribe files (that are not of SQL type) on the disk.
Clicking on a “Partition” value in the File List Window brings up the Partition Details Window for that
file. This displays the secondary file partitions and their properties.
