14.3 Appendix C: H.264 HD Video Codec

™ Bitrate Limits

Encode Bit Rate Limits:

The video encoding bit rate limits specified below are subjective suggestions based on limited
empirical testing. The QVENC encoder and QVPRO codec will allow you to enter any video stream
bit rate and will attempt to produce the best video quality it can, based on the video bit rate you set.
For Capped VBR mode, it uses this value as an upper limit on the peak bit rate. Unless noted
otherwise, all bitrates below assume full NTSC (29.97 fps) or PAL frame rates (25 fps).
Therefore, we have provided the values here are only as a general guideline to help with
estimating the expected network loading:

Maximum Video Encoding Stream Bit Rates:

30 Mbps for UDP or RTP transport (error correction disabled)
15 Mbps with ARQ error correction enabled

Minimum Suggested Stream Bit Rates for general content, such as movies:

(assumes audio bitrate of 160 Kbps)

MPEG-2 (Main Profile, CBR mode):

3.0 Mbps for Full SD video resolution (720x480)

750 Kbps for CIF video resolution (352x240)

450 Kbps for CIF video resolution at Half Frame Rate

H.264 (MPEG4-AVC High Profile, CBR mode):

5.0 Mbps for 1080i video resolution

3.0 Mbps for 720p video resolution

1.4 Mbps for Full SD video resolution (720x480)

450 Kbps for CIF video resolution (352x240)

300 Kbps for CIF video resolution at Half Frame Rate

Note: Video quality is subjective and content dependent. The minimum bitrates suggested above

may not produce acceptable video for any given application. As a general rule we suggest
that you use H.264 encoding for best video quality, and adjust the bitrate based on your
own observations to suit your needs.

Decode Bitrate Limits

Bitrate limits related to receiving MPEG Transport Stream video from the network:

Maximum MPEG TS bitrates (MPEG-2 or H.264):

30 Mbps for UDP input transport
15 Mbps for ARQ

Minimum MPEG TS bitrates (MPEG-2 or H.264):

128 Kbps
