5.7.2

Materials

Guide tapes come in various materials and widths and materials. All IM chest ironers use 3/4”
width material should be used for guide tapes. Guide tapes for ironing machinery are primarily
available in 3 versions of 2 materials – Polyester and Nomex. Nomex is a Dupont trade name for a
type of Aramid fiber with a maximum service temperature of 220

o

C, perfect for high temperature

ironing. Polyester (Polyethylene terephthalate) is a very common material, also used in poly-
cotton sheets and other flat goods. Polyester typically softens at 338

o

F (170

o

C) and should not be

used at temperatures much above this.

• Polyester – good for steam heated ironers.

• Polyester – Aramid Blend - Good for steam and thermal fluid ironers up to about 380

o

F

(193

o

C).

• Nomex (Aramid) - This is the preferred material for all high speed high temperature ironers,

particularly for Thermal fluid heated ironers operating in excess of 380

o

F (193

o

C).

5.7.3

Routing The Guide Tapes

When installing guide tapes they should be routed through the machine as shown in figure 5.16.
There are many methods of installing tapes, but the most people prefer to tie new tape to an
