SNA – Systems Network Architecture
IBM’s proprietary high level networking protocol standard.

Subnet Mask
A bit mask used to identify which bits in an IP address correspond to the network address and subnet
portions of the address. This mask is referred to as the subnet mask because the network portion of the
address can be determined by the class inherent in an IP address. The address mask has ones (1) in
positions corresponding to the network and subnet numbers and zeros (0) in the host number positions.

SVGA - Super Video Graphics Array
A video display standard; the resolution is 800 x 600 4-bit pixels. Each pixel can therefore be one of 16
colors.

TCP/IP – Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol
A set of protocols developed for the internet to get data from one network device to another.
IPThe network layer for the TCP/IP protocol is a connectionless, best-effort packet switching protocol. It
provides packet routing, fragmentation, and re-assembly through the data link layer.

URL - Uniform Resource Locator (world-wide web address)

An address identifying the location of a file on the Internet, consisting of the protocol, the computer on
which the file is located, and the file’s location on that computer.

WINS – Windows Internet Naming Service
Software which resolves NetBIOS names to IP addresses.

WOSA – Windows Open System Architecture
An earlier umbrella term for a variety of programming interfaces from Microsoft designed to provide application
interoperability across the Windows environment. WOSA provides a common denominator for front-end
Windows applications to access back-end services. For example, any WOSA-compliant query program from
one vendor can gain access to any WOSA-compliant DBMS from any other vendor.

XML – Extensible Markup Language
A metalanguage written in SGML that allows one to design a markup language, used to allow for the easy
interchange of documents on the World Wide Web.
