XP Continuous Access Journal

You can use HP StorageWorks XP Continuous Access Journal to create and maintain duplicate
copies of all user data stored on a distant array for data duplication, backup, and disaster recovery
purposes. This enables you to recover valuable data and protect it from a disaster, such as an
earthquake, fire, or system failure. XP Continuous Access Journal for a UNIX or PC server provides
asynchronous copy modes to accommodate a wide variety of user requirements and data
copy/movement scenarios. XP Continuous Access Journal provides a superior hardware-based
solution for data duplication, data migration, remote copy, and disaster recovery tasks.

XP Continuous Access Journal operations are nondisruptive and allow the primary data volume of
each XP Continuous Access Journal volume pair to remain online to all hosts for read and write
I/O operations. Once established, XP Continuous Access Journal continues unattended to provide
continuous, real-time data backup. By establishing primary and secondary data volumes on different
arrays, you can perform asynchronous operations remotely. For Fibre Channel connections, you
can perform XP Continuous Access Journal operations across distances of up to 30 km (18.6 miles)
using single-mode longwave optical fibre cables in a switch configuration.

When using XP Continuous Access Journal, data being copied is temporarily stored in journal
volumes
, which are a type of logical volume. You can use XP Continuous Access Journal to configure
and manage highly reliable data replication systems using journal volumes to reduce the possibility
of copy operation suspension. Copy operations can be suspended due to restrictions on data
transfers from the primary site to the secondary site.

You can perform XP Continuous Access Journal operations with XP Business Copy operations (see

XP Business Copy and ShadowImage for Mainframe

) to provide multiple internal copies of XP

Continuous Access Journal volumes. XP Continuous Access Journal also supports Volume Manager
and Cache LUN XP on the local array, allowing XP Continuous Access Journal to meet a variety
of user needs and facilitate data copying and migration. See

Combining XP Continuous Access

Journal with other data management functions

for more information.

The XP Remote Web Console software displays detailed XP Continuous Access Journal information
and provides options for configuring and performing XP Continuous Access Journal operations.
The Remote Web Console software communicates with the local array's SVP through defined
TCP/IP connections. If a system failure or disaster occurs at the primary site, the Remote Web
Console software simplifies and expedites disaster recovery procedures.

This guide describes and provides instructions for using the licensed Remote Web Console software
to perform XP Continuous Access Journal operations. You can also use XP RAID Manager to perform
XP Continuous Access Journal operations from a UNIX or PC host. For more information about
using XP RAID Manager to perform XP Continuous Access Journal operations, see the HP
StorageWorks XP RAID Manager User Guide
. This guide does not cover Hitachi Universal Replicator
for z/OS operations for mainframe data. For information and instructions on performing Universal
Replicator for Mainframe operations, contact your HP account support representative.

XP Business Copy and ShadowImage for Mainframe

You can use the XP Business Copy and Hitachi ShadowImage™ for z/OS data duplication features
to set up and maintain multiple copies of logical volumes within the same local array. You can
perform XP Business Copy operations for UNIX/PC server-based data using the licensed XP Business
Copy or XP RAID Manager on a UNIX/PC host. You can perform Hitachi ShadowImage for z/OS
operations using Hitachi ShadowImage for z/OS and also using TSO and/or ICKDSF commands.

RAID-protected XP Business Copy duplicates are created within the same local array at hardware
speeds. You can use XP Business Copy with XP Continuous Access Journal to maintain multiple
copies of critical data at primary and/or secondary sites and provide maximum flexibility in data
