Storage Systems

XP Continuous Access Journal operations involve the storage systems at the primary and secondary
sites. The primary storage system consists of the main control unit (primary storage system) and
SVP. The secondary storage system consists of the remote control unit (secondary storage system)
and SVP.

To provide greater flexibility and to enable the storage system to be tailored to unique customer
operating requirements, operational parameters and optional modes are available for the storage
system. At installation, the storage system modes are set to their default values, so make sure to
discuss these settings with your HP service representative. The storage system modes can only be
changed by your HP service representative.

XP Continuous Access Journal Software

The XP Remote Web Console Java application program product includes XP Continuous Access
Journal for the storage system. The Remote Web Console software communicates with the SVP of
each storage system over defined TCP/IP connections. For further information on Remote Web
Console operations, see the HP StorageWorks XP24000/XP20000 Remote Web Console User
Guide
or contact your HP service representative.

The Remote Web Console computer at the primary site must be attached to the primary storage
system. You should also attach a Remote Web Console computer at the secondary site to all
secondary storage systems. Having a Remote Web Console computer at the secondary site enables
you to change the XP Continuous Access Journal parameter for the secondary storage system and
access the XP Continuous Access Journal secondary data volume (for example, for maintenance
of media). If you need to perform XP Continuous Access Journal operations in the reverse direction
from the remote site to the primary site (for example, for disaster recovery), XP Continuous Access
Journal simplifies and expedites this process.

Note: If the Remote Web Console computer is not installed, contact your HP service representative
for information on XP Continuous Access Journal configuration services.

Logical Disk Controllers

CUs (control units) in the storage system are divided into groups of 255 CUs. Each group of CUs
is controlled by a virtual storage system that logically exists in the storage system (logical storage
