You can choose three of these five data fields to display on the AvMap screen. So, when your target call sign is

moving, you can get real time information and a visual display on the AvMap G6 APRS on a second map view. G6

APRS supports full APRS icon presentation. The decoded APRS packet from the KENWOOD TM‑D710A/E/GA/GE (in

KENWOOD waypoint format) is processed by the AvMap G6 APRS operating system and APRS icons are shown on the

moving map of the navigator. When the APRS icon is made on the screen, it now can be one of over 100 standardized

APRS icons along with the call sign. Using the Kenwood sentence, the G6 APRS provides special features like auto

contact time out, Dead Reckoning course/speed leader predictor on the G6 APRS screen and intercept the target.
Setup of the KENWOOD transceiver with AvMap is very simple. Using the defaults of the KENWOOD transceiver, only a

few menu configurations are needed to set up the TM-D710A/E/GA/GE.

• Menu 600: (BASIC SETTINGS):
• MY CALLSIGN: Your call sign and “‑9”. (such as “W6GPS‑9”)
• Menu 602: (GPS PORT)
• BAUD RATE: 9600
• INPUT: GPS
• OUTPUT: WAYPOINT
• Menu 603 (WAYPOINT):
• FORMAT: KENWOOD
• NAME: 9‑CHAR
• Menu 611: (BEACON TX ALGORITHM)
• METHOD: AUTO or SmartBeaconing

Press [TNC] on the operation panel of transceiver (“APRS12” should appear on the display).

Note:

◆ For a more detailed setup of APRS and the options available, see section 3 PREPARATIONS FOR USING APRS of AvMap

G6 APRS owner’s manual.

With the AvMap G6 APRS, the only thing needed is to verify in the APRS setup menu that the APRS function is enabled

and the baud rate interface is 9600 APRS. The 3‑Pole plug (2 black rings) is inserted into the TM‑D710A/E/GA/GE GPS

port of the operation panel and the 4‑pole (3 black rings) connection to the I/O serial port) of the AvMap G6, and in time,

you will see APRS activity on your AvMap screen.
APRS activity is stored in the contacts folder in the APRS menu for easy reference so you can navigate to it or monitor a

particular APRS call sign in Tactical Mode. With the KENWOOD TM‑D710A/E/GA/GE and AvMap G6, there is no need

to mess around with USB to serial converters nor is there need for a cumbersome computer. Also, the serial input to the

TM‑D710A/E/GA/GE is on the operation panel, so it is close to the GPS receiver for a neater installation.
