8 Unidirectional Configuration

Follow these guidelines to set up a unidirectional configuration:

1.

Verify that your setup plan meets remote-copy requirements.

See:

“Requirements” (page 13)

“N-to-1 Remote-Copy Considerations” (page 43)

“1-to-N Remote-Copy Considerations” (page 44)

“SLD Remote-Copy Considerations” (page 56)

2.

Review the basic unidirectional setup.

See

“Example Unidirectional Remote-Copy Setup” (page 76)

3.

Verify connectivity between the remote-copy pair you plan to configure.

See

“Verifying Connectivity between Remote-Copy Pairs for Unidirectional Setup” (page 77)

4.

Set up the primary and backup systems (the remote-copy pair) and check the links. See:

“Setting Up the Primary System for Unidirectional Remote Copy” (page 78)

“Setting Up the Backup System for Unidirectional Remote Copy” (page 79)

“Checking the Links between Systems for Unidirectional Remote Copy” (page 80)

5.

Make sure that the virtual volumes you plan to replicate with remote copy exist.

See

“Verifying That Virtual Volumes Are Created for Unidirectional Remote Copy” (page 81)

6.

Create volume groups.

See

“Creating Volume Groups for Unidirectional Remote Copy” (page 82)

7.

Decide how to first copy the data from the primary system to the backup system.

See

“Selecting an Initial Replication Method for Unidirectional Remote Copy” (page 84)

8.

Start initial data replication:

To copy data directly from the primary to the backup system, see

“Starting Initial

Replication for Unidirectional Remote Copy: Copying Data Directly from Primary Volume
Groups” (page 84)

.

To copy data first to tape and then from tape to the backup system, see

“Using Tape for

Initial Synchronization and Backup” (page 151)

.

When you configure remote-copy systems, you create a target definition on each system. This
target definition is used to identify the target system in the remote-copy pair; for example, the
primary system’s target system is the backup system.

For more information, see

“Remote-Copy Pairs and Targets” (page 99)
