Overview of Products

A product is any item (or set of items: jobs, files, or documents) that buyers can order from your online
store. The major types of products in Digital StoreFront are:

Ad-Hoc: A product that buyers create using their own content (e.g., uploaded files) and the printing

and finishing options you offer

Non-Printed: An item that is not a print product (e.g., finished goods, paper clips, a carton of pencils,

a ream of paper).

Static: A document that has fixed content (e.g., a course-pack of readings) and limited print and

finishing options for buyers. Static products are defined by the print provider.

Variable Data Product: A template-based printed product that can be customized for a range of

recipients with variable information such as customer name, address, phone number, etc. This
product type is available only if you have licensed one of the VDP modules (XMPie or FusionPro).

To create a FusionPro variable data product, see FusionPro Products.

To create an XMPie variable data product, see XMPie Products.

Kit: A set of (non-kit) products assembled into a package and purchased together.

Print products (ad hoc, static, and variable data), which you will print to order, are made of the
following building blocks: content (e.g., a customer-uploaded file converted to PDF format), media (e.g.,
paper) and print services (e.g., printing and finishing options). Your customers (buyers) will supply the
content (e.g., a document to be printed or a list of names for a variable data product), but you must
establish the media and print/finishing options they can select when shopping on your site, so you must
define media and print services before creating a printed product.

The sections below will cover (1) media, (2) print services, (3) ticket templates, and (4) product creation
and management.

To expedite the print service setup process, survey the equipment and services offered at your

print shop(s) (i.e., physical production sites) and create a list of print services, media characteristics,
and media available at each before you begin managing print services in Digital StoreFront.
