Cobalt rarely occurs in natural water. It is used in the manufacture of alloys

to increase corrosion resistance and strength. It is found in wastewaters as a

corrosion by-product.

APPLICATION:

Industrial wastewater.

0.00–2.00 ppm Cobalt

METHOD:

PAN (1-[2-Pyridylazo]-2-Naphthol) forms a greenish

complex with Cobalt (Co

+2

) at a pH of 5.

SAMPLE HANDLING

& PRESERVATION:

Store samples in acid-washed plastic bottles. Adjust

pH to less than 2 with nitric acid. Adjust sample pH to 5

before testing.

INTERFERENCES:

Iron (+2) and high concentrations of heavy metals.
