9.0 Operation, Administration and Maintenance Sublayer

The Operation, Administration and Maintenance (OAM) sublayer provides mechanisms useful for
monitoring link operations such as remote fault indication and remote loopback control. In gen-
eral, OAM provides network operators with the ability to monitor the health of the network and
quickly determine the location of any failing links or fault conditions. OAM provides data link layer
mechanisms that complement applications that may reside in higher layers. From the Main
Menu, type 9 and press <Enter>. The 802.3AH OAM menu (see Figure 9-1) appears.

9.1 OAM Control

The OAM Control screen provides the customer with information concerning operational status,
maximum PDU size, OAM revision, functions supported, loopback status, and remote link fault.
The customer can also set the parameters described below from the OAM Control screen. Type
1 and press <Enter> The OAM Control screen (see Figure 9-2) appears. Press <Esc> to return to
the 802.3AH OAM Menu.
