IPS Empress
® Direct is a light-curing, radiopaque, nano-hybrid composite
based on state-of-the-art technology, which is suitable for the fabrication of
restorations that fulfill the highest demands. IPS Empress Direct cures with
light in the wavelength range of 400-500 nm (blue light).
Shades
IPS Empress Direct is offered in 32 different shades and 5 different degrees of
translucency. The following shades are available:
Enamel shades
A1, A2, A3, A3.5, A4, B1, B2, B3, B4, C1, C2, C3, D2, D3, Bleach-L, Bleach-XL
Dentin shades
A1, A2, A3, A3.5, A4, IVA5, IVA6, B1, B2, C3, D2, Bleach-L, Bleach-XL
Translucent shades
Trans 20, Trans 30, Opal*
*Not radiopaque due to its high transparency
Composition
The monomer matrix is composed of dimethacrylates (20-21.5 wt%, opales-
cent shade 17 wt%). The fillers contain barium glass, ytterbium trifluoride,
mixed oxide, silicon dioxide and copolymer (77.5-79 wt%, opalescent shade
83 wt%). Additional contents: additives, catalysts, stabilizers and pigments
(<1.0 wt%). The total content of inorganic fillers is 75-79 wt% or 52-59 vol%
(opalescent shade 60.5 wt% or 45 vol%). The particle size of the inorganic
fillers is between 40 nm and 3000 nm with a mean particle size of 550 nm.
Indication
– Anterior restorations (Class III, IV)
– Restorations in the posterior region (Classes I and II)
– Tooth neck restorations (Class V, e.g. in the case of cervical caries, root
erosion, wedge-shaped defects)
– Corrections of tooth positions and tooth shape (e.g. diastema closure,
closure of interdental “black triangles”, lengthening of the incisal edge)
– Direct veneers
Contraindication
Placement of IPS Empress Direct restorations is contraindicated
– if a dry working field cannot be established, or if the stipulated
technique cannot be applied
– if a patient is known to be allergic to any of the ingredients in
IPS Empress Direct
Side effects
In rare cases, components of IPS Empress Direct may lead to sensitization.
IPS Empress Direct should not be used in such cases. To avoid possible irrita-
tion of the pulp, areas close to the pulp should be protected with a suitable
pulp/dentin protector (selectively apply a calcium hydroxide-based prepara-
tion in areas close to the pulp and coat with a suitable liner).
Interactions
Substances containing eugenol/oil of cloves may inhibit the polymerization of
composite materials. Consequently, the application of such materials together
with IPS Empress Direct must be avoided. Discoloration may occur in combi-
nation with cationic mouthwashes, plaque disclosing agents and chlorhexi-
dine.
