Application
1. Shade determination
Clean the teeth prior to shade determination. The enamel shade is selected
with the tooth still moist. The dentin shade can be taken either by placing the
tab next to the prepared tooth or next to the cervical area of the canine.
2. Isolation
Appropriate isolation is required, best with a rubber dam (e.g. OptraDam

®

Plus).

3. Cavity preparation
Cavity preparation is carried out according to the requirements of the adhe-
sive technique, i.e. protecting the tooth structure. Enamel edges in the ante-
rior region are bevelled. In the posterior region, only sharp enamel edges
should be rounded (finishing diamonds, 25-40 µm). Caries-free cervical de-
fects are not prepared, only cleaned with pumice or other suitable cleaning
pastes with the help of rubber cups or rotary brushes. In case of sclerotic
dentin, superficial reconditioning with a rose bur can improve the adhesive
bond. Subsequently, all residue in the cavity is removed with water spray. The
cavity is dried with water- and oil-free air.
4. Pulp protection / Base
Do not apply a base material when using an enamel/dentin bonding agent.
Only cover very deep areas close to the pulp with a calcium hydroxide material
(e.g. ApexCal

®

) and subsequently use pressure-resistant cement (e.g. glass

ionomer cement, such as Vivaglass

®

Liner). Do not cover other cavity walls,

since they can be used to support the bond with an enamel/dentin adhesive.
5. Placement of a matrix / interdental wedge
Use a wrap-around matrix for cavities affecting the promixal area or a
sectional matrix and wedge.
6. Conditioning / Application of the bonding agent
Condition the tooth structure and apply the bonding agent according to the
Instructions for Use of the product in use. We recommend using Syntac

®

or

ExciTE

®

F (with phosphoric acid etching) or AdheSE

®

or AdheSE

®

One F self-

etching adhesive.
7. Application of IPS Empress Direct

Since a large number of IPS Empress Direct Dentin and Enamel shades in
different translucencies for the creation of anatomical detail are avail-
able, any layering technique can be creatively used to achieve highly es-
thetic restorations. For an optimum result, apply IPS Empress Direct in
layers of max. 2 mm (or 1.5 mm Dentin shades) thickness and adapt with
e.g. OptraSculpt

®

/ OptraSculpt

®

Pad.

Sufficient exposure to the curing light prevents incomplete polymeriza-
tion. Recommended curing times (exposure time) and light intensities are
listed in Table 1. Hold the light emission window as closely as possible to
the surface of the restorative material.

When using a metal matrix, additionally polymerize the restoration from
the buccal or lingual/palatal aspect after removing the matrix, if no
Bluephase

®

curing light was used or if the light probe could not be optimally

positioned (e.g. far away from the material or with divergent radiation).

In many cases, a flowable composite is now used for the initial layer in
order to create an even cavity floor and to simplify the adaptation of the
subsequently used restorative material. The use of a flowable composite
(e.g. Tetric EvoFlow

®

) as an initial thin layer is optional. This layer must be

light-cured in a separate step (the instructions of the respective Instruc-
tions for Use must be observed).

8. Finishing / Checking the occlusion / Polishing
Remove excess material with suitable finishers (e.g. Astropol

®

F) or fine dia-

monds after polymerization. Remove proximal excess with diamond finishers,
tungsten carbide finishers, finishing strips, or flexible finishing discs. Check
the occlusion and articulation and apply appropriate grinding corrections to
prevent premature contacts or undesired articulation paths on the surface of
the restorations. Use silicone polishers (e.g. Astropol

®

P, Astropol

®

HP, Astro-

brush or OptraPol

®

Next Generation) as well as polishing discs and polishing

strips to polish the restorations to a durable high gloss.

Additional information
1. If necessary, additional IPS Empress Direct material can be directly ap-

plied to polymerized material. If the IPS Empress Direct restoration has
already been polished, it must first be roughened and wetted with
Heliobond

®

before fresh IPS Empress Direct is applied.

2. IPS Empress Direct should be at room temperature when it is applied.

Cool temperatures render the material difficult to extrude.

3.

For single use only. If IPS Empress Direct is applied from the Cavifil
directly in the mouth of the patient, the Cavifil must be discarded

after use to prevent cross-contamination between patients.

4. Syringes or Cavifils should not be disinfected with oxidizing disinfection

agents.

Warning
Unpolymerized IPS Empress Direct should not come in contact with the skin,
mucous membrane, or eyes. Unpolymerized IPS Empress Direct may have a
slight irritating effect and may lead to a sensitization against methacrylates.
Commercial medical gloves do not provide protection against sensitivity to
methacrylates.

Storage
– Storage temperature 2–28 °C / 36–82 °F.
– Close syringes/Cavifils immediately after use. Exposure to light causes

premature polymerization.

– Do not use IPS Empress Direct after the indicated date of expiration.
– Shelf life: see information on Cavifils, syringes and packages.

Keep material out of children’s reach.
For use in dentistry only.

The material has been developed solely for use in dentistry. Processing should be carried out strictly ac-
cording to the Instructions for Use. Liability cannot be accepted for damages resulting from failure to ob-
serve the Instructions or the stipulated area of application. The user is responsible for testing the products
for their suitability and use for any purpose not explicitly stated in the Instructions. Descriptions and data
constitute no warranty of attributes and are not binding.
