hapter 14. End-Preparation for Orbital

Welding

P

roper and consistent end preparation is an essential requirement for

repeatable high-quality orbital welding results. The most commonly used end

preparation for orbital GTA fusion

welding is the Square Butt prepara-

tion in which the ends of the tubing

are faced square with no bevel so

that they mate together in the weld

head with no discernable gap.

The ASME Bioprocessing Equipment

Standard (BPE-2002) has defined

the acceptance criteria for ends of

fittings and weld components for

orbital welding in biopharmaceutical

applications.

Tube ends must be faced square without burrs

or breaks to fit up snugly in the weld head.
