17.8 Configuring Virtual Links

Virtual links are used to connect a temporarily disjointed non-backbone area to the backbone
area, or to repair a noncontiguous backbone area. In this example, the ABR R3 has temporarily
lost connection to Area 0 disconnecting Area 2 from the backbone area. The virtual link between
ABR R1 and ABR R2 connects Area 2 to Area 0. Area 1 is used as a transit area.
