48 Configuring System Message Logging
By default, a switch sends the output from system message to a logging process. The logging
process controls the distribution of logging messages to various destinations, such as the logging
buffer, terminal lines, local log file, or a UNIX syslog server, depending on your configuration.
By default, the switch logs normal but significant system messages to its internal buffer. You can
specify which system messages should be saved based on the type of the severity level. The
messages are time-stamped to enhance real-time debugging and management.
You can access the logged system messages using the switch command-line interface (CLI) or
by saving them to a properly configured syslog server. The switch software saves the syslog
messages in an internal buffer that can store up to 1000 messages. You can monitor the system
messages remotely by accessing the switch through telnet or the console port, or by viewing the
logs on a syslog server.
48.1 Configuring System Message Logging
48.1.1 System Log Message Format
The format of log message is:
<Priority>Timestamp Hostname +Module-Severity-Summary: Message
The part of the message preceding the percent sign depends on the setting of the logging
timestamp.
Priority Combination of severity and facility.
Timestamp Date and time of the message or event, the format of
timestamp depends on the logging timestamp
configuration.
Hostname Hostname of the switch.
Module The module which the message generated (for
example, RIP, OSPF, STP).
Severity Single-digit code from 0 to 7 that is the severity of the
message.
Summary The summary of this message.
Message The message body.
48.1.2 Enabling and Disabling Message Logging
Message logging is enabled on logging file and logging buffer by default, but not on terminal
lines, remote log server and SNMP traps.
