Figure 29. Editing the mksysb Script

To be able to restore the mksysb from a microchannel-based RS/6000 to a
PCI-based RS/6000, you will have to install all the device drivers which are
required to support the PCI-based RS/6000 (rspc) platform type. To do this, use
the SMIT fastpath:

smit devinst

From here, install all the PCI and ISA device drivers which are required for the
target PCI-based RS/6000. If you are unsure of which PCI and ISA device drivers
to install, we recommend that you install all of the PCI, ISA and RSPC device
drivers which are available on the AIX installation media. This way, you can be
sure that the mksysb will contain device drivers for all supported PCI and ISA
devices you have installed in your PCI-based RS/6000. You will be able to remove
any device drivers you do not require at a later date.

rspc.tape.proto File

The

/usr/lib/boot/rspc.tape.proto

file, which is required to create a bootable

tape for PCI-based RS/6000 systems, is installed with the

devices.rspc.base.rte

fileset.

When you have created your mksysb, you should be able to restore it without
problems. After installation, you will have to manually configure any ISA adapters
which are present in the machine.

5.4.6 Cloning

The problem with using the method described in 5.4.5, “Creating System Backups
on Microchannel-Based RS/6000 Systems” on page 87 is that you will probably
install device filesets which aren't required. Trying to determine which ones to
remove after restoring the

mksysb

will not be easy.

There is another "unsupported" method of creating

mksysb's

on other platform

types which can be restored on the PCI-based RS/6000 servers without first
installing all the devices drivers which are required. The down side with the
method is that you have to use an installation CD-ROM at the same level of AIX as
your

mksysb

every time you restore the

mksysb

.

The steps for this cloning method are described below:

1. Create a customized diskette.
