First, the firmware must have device support for a particular graphics adapter to be
able to display the firmware power-on self test (POST) icons and, if selected, the
SMS graphical/ASCII screen. The firmware will test the adapter but not the display.
If the graphics adapter is found to be non-functional, the system will provide a beep
sequence to indicate that there is a problem. The beep sequence is one long beep
followed by one short beep after which an error is logged and the system
continues. After the firmware has completed the POST procedure (see 4.4,
“Understanding the Firmware” on page 64 for more information about the firmware
boot process), AIX must contain the device driver to enable AIX to use the device.
When AIX is installed and an S15 is present in the system, the support for the S15
graphics adapter is automatically installed. This occurs when the adapter is
recognized by the configuration process.

5.6.1 Installing the S15 Graphics Adapter

If you are installing an S15 graphics adapter after AIX has been installed on your
machine (for example, you installed only with an ASCII screen), then you may need
to install device support. To install the card, you can do the following:

1. Check that the device driver is installed in your machine:

lslpp -l |grep -i s15

2. Install the device driver if the previous command returned nothing. The device

driver which AIX uses to provide support for the S15 graphics adapter is
contained in the devices.pci.0e100091 filesets:

devices.pci.0e100091.X11

- AIXwindows S15/H10 Graphics

devices.pci.0e100091.diag - S15/H10 Graphics Adapter

devices.pci.0e100091.rte

- H10/S15 Graphics Adapter

Install these using:

smit devinst

3. Shut down and power-off the RS/6000.

4. Install the adapter (refer to the System User's Guide that was provided with

your system).

5. Power-on the system.

During the firmware POST, you should see the POST icons on the screen attached
to the S15. Once AIX has booted, you should be able to start using the adapter
straight away.

You can list information about the graphics adapter by using the

lsdisp

command:

lsdisp
