6.3.2 Selecting ISA Adapter Hardware Parameters

Your system will work without problems only if there are no conflicts among the
parameters for the different ISA adapters in the system. When selecting the
parameters for the new ISA adapter, you can use the information collected at the
previous step and the information provided by the Installation Guide booklet for the
adapter. Try to use the predefined default parameters whenever possible.

The number of parameters to set depends on the type of adapter. For some
adapters, such as ISA X.25 Coprocessor/1 Adapter, you have to set values for
Interrupt Level, Bus I/O Address and Bus Memory Address, while for others, such
as the ISA 8-Port Asynchronous Adapter, you have to specify values only for the
Bus I/O Address.

Refer to the sections describing each ISA adapter configuration to know which
parameters have to be specified for each of them.

6.3.3 Installing Device Drivers

If not yet installed, identify and install the device driver for the new ISA adapter. To
install the software using the SMIT support, you might enter the fastpath:

Install ISA Adapter Software

The required filesets to install ISA adapters device drivers and diagnostics
supported by AIX Version 4 are listed below:

devices.isa.cxia

ISA 8-Port Asynchronous Adapter Software

devices.isa.cxia128

ISA 128-Port Asynchronous Adapter Software

devices.isa.mm2

4-Port Selectable Multiport Model 2 Device Driver

devices.isa.ethernet

IBM ISA Ethernet Adapter Software

devices.isa.tokenring

6.3.4 Defining ISA Adapters at AIX Level

A SMIT menu is provided with AIX Version 4.1.4 that supports configuration of ISA
adapters.

A second method to configure ISA adapter attributes is accomplished by using the

mkdev

command. In this case, you can specify the attributes directly on the

command line. When possible, we suggest you to use the SMIT menu.

The SMIT support for some of the ISA adapters allows you to define the adapter to
the operating system before physically installing it. The

smit isa

fastpath provides

a menu to configure and manage ISA adapters, as shown below:
