2 UAM authentication architecture
UAM function in simple AAA authentication model
A simple AAA authentication model contains endpoints, authentication functions, and authentication
methods, as shown in Figure 9 .
• An endpoint is the terminal device such as a laptop, desk computer, and pad.
• An authentication function refers to the communication between an endpoint and its access device.
• An authentication method refers to the communication between an endpoint and the RADIUS
server.
UAM serves as the RADIUS server to authenticate user identities.

Endpoint types
The UAM authentication architecture supports the following endpoint types:
• Smart device—Intelligent mobile phones and tablet computers.
• Regular terminal—PCs and laptops (collectively called PCs in this document).
• Mute terminal—IP phones and printers.
