NOTE: Toggling the AUTO X-FADE function on or off will not affect any currently existing
cross-fades.

Volume Envelope
The Volume Envelope is a graph of a Region’ playback volume over time. The Node tool is used
to manipulate volume envelope by placing nodes, or inflection points at places where volume
changes can occur. By inserting nodes at appropriate spots, you can mute a section without
cutting it out, duck a note, boost a weakly played note, or create a custom fade. While not a
replacement for mix automation, the Volume Envelope is handy for region-based control of
volume over time.

One application is adjusting the level of a punch-in to match the rest of the track.

When the View Envelopes option is turned on (Options |
View Envelopes) or when the Node tool is selected (regardless
of the Option setting), all volume envelopes become visible.
With that option turned off, the envelopes disappear from the screen until you again get out the
Node tool.

The normal Node tool cursor looks like a pencil. Clicking on a region with the Node Tool active
places a node on the Region at the click point. From there, the node can be dragged to the
position (along the volume envelope line earlier or later in time) and volume (up and down) as
desired. Pressing the [C

TRL

] key turns the pencil into an eraser to delete nodes.

There are always two nodes on every region, one at each end, initially at unity gain (0 dB). You
don’t normally see them because unless the Volume Envelope function in the region is turned on,
there’s no need to even know they’re there. But the once you click on a “virgin” region with the

Node tool, the Volume Envelope
becomes active and you’ll see the
lines and nodes displayed. The
node at the beginning of the region
is still at unity gain (0 dB), but the
node at the end of the region will
automatically move to match the
level of the first node you insert.

First Node placement with Volume Indicator box

The figure above shows what to expect when you place the first volume envelope node in a
region. The volume fades linearly from the initial volume to the level at which you clicked, and
then continues at that volume to the end of the region. We can almost guarantee that this isn’t
exactly what you want, but it’s the starting point. From there, you can add more nodes and drag
them around to create your desired volume changes.

The envelope does have a node at each end. You can see these nodes by zooming in. You can
even grab them with the Node tool and manipulate them like any other nodes with the exception
that they cannot be deleted (after all, where would we be without them?).

Whenever you click with the Node tool, either when first placing a node or when clicking on an
existing node, a Volume Indicator box pops up displaying the volume level and time position of
that node.

Holding the [C

TRL

] key with the Envelope tool active changes the pencil to an eraser for deleting

nodes. When a node is deleted, the line straightens out to connect the remaining nodes. When all
nodes are deleted, you’re back to a straight line.
