Select

Setup TCP to configure the standard network settings including IP Address,

Subnet, and Gateway. These settings affect FTP operation as well. The MDS network
uses TCP/IP addresses to identify the machines. See the section on

Networking

for

information on setting up the IP Address, Subnet, and Gateway.

Return to the top-level. If no menu is currently open, press the SYSTEM button to open the
SYSTEM MENU.

Select

MDS Network to access Network Channel, 48Tk Mode, Link Options,

and

Update (requires a Page-Right ►operation).

Set the Network Channel using the

<< and >> soft buttons. determines over which of

the 16 available MDS (Mackie Digital Systems) Network channels the HDR24/96 will
communicate. Choose OFF to disable the 48-Track Mode for local control.

The 48Tk Mode menu defines whether the HDR24/96 is a Master (Tracks 1-24), or a Slave
(Tracks 25-48). Only one Master unit and one Slave unit are allowed per Network Channel.

Choose

Link Options to set what actions and information is linked between units.

Other considerations
The Network fields, IP Address, Subnet, and Gateway are the settings for the standard
network features and affect FTP operation. See the section on

Networking

for information on

setting up the IP Address, Subnet, and Gateway. It IS possible to put a 48-track system
into an FTP environment – you simply have to meet the conditions for both in the way you
address the HDR units. If you want to have a continuous connection to a DAW, a LAN, or the
Internet while using a 48-track system, you can accomplish this with a hub, switch, or router and
some common sense about keeping the network quiet while you work with the recorder. Don't
leave e-mail or web browser software open on a networked computer while you are recording.
The Slave HDR may lag the Master punching in if there happens to be network traffic right at the
crucial moment.

If you frequently transfer files between your recorders and a computer, switching Ethernet cables
to go between 48-track operation and FTP transfers can get mighty tedious. This is a good excuse
to spring for an Ethernet switch (or hub or router, depending on how complex a network you want
to set up). Connect each Ethernet jack from your recorders , as well as your computer to the
switch. When connecting in this way, use standard Ethernet cables. A crossover cable will not
work.

HDR24/96s that are set to different Network Channels can coexist on the network even though
they will not be linked operationally. This allows multiple 48-track machines to be “hubbed” to a
common FTP station.

When an HDR24/96 is assigned to an MDS Network Channel, it becomes linked to all other
HDR24/96 recorders set to the same channel. Use only 2 HDRs per Network Channel on the
same network.

Setting the Network Channel to Off puts the HDR24/96 into Local mode for local control and
operation, and prevents it from sending or receiving MDS Network messages.

When an HDR24/96 is assigned to an MDS Network channel, all machines assigned to the same
Network Channel exchange command, control, and parameter update messages with each other.
If a linked parameter, command, or control changes on one HDR24/96, all HDR24/96s with that
Link Option enabled also change. If a Link Option is disabled (unchecked), the HDR24/96
ignores all messages containing that kind of data.
