Prepare Parts for Assembly

Damage on the cup and cone inner race surfaces
that touch the rollers.Figure 3.5.

Inspect Hypoid Pinion and
Ring Gear Sets

CAUTION

Hypoid drive pinions and ring gears are
machined in matched sets. When a drive
pinion or ring gear of a hypoid set needs to be
replaced, both drive gear and pinion must be
replaced at the same time.

Inspect hypoid pinions and gears for wear and
damage. Gears that are worn or damaged
must be replaced. Also verify the cone bearing
seats and spline in the pinion shaft.

Inspect Main Differential
Assembly

Parts that are damaged must be replaced. Inspect
the following parts for wear or stress. Figure 3.6.

Inside surfaces of both case halves

Both surfaces of all thrust washers

Four trunnion ends of spider cross

Teeth and splines of both side gears

Teeth and bore of all differential pinions

Friction disc packs if used

CAUTION

Always replace old or worn thrust washers,
differential side gears and pinion gears in sets to
avoid higher stress and early damage to parts.

Inspect Axle Shafts

For wear and cracks at flange, shaft and splines.
Replace axle shaft if required.
