Note that the user added to the group still gets its own copy of the fax, and should be routed off of the

fax server to either an email address or to a Microsoft Fax client.

2.6 Outbound Faxes

2.6.1 Error and Retries

When NET SatisFAXtion tries to send a fax and gets an error, one of two things happen. Either the error is

retryable and the fax moves to the Scheduled Queue to wait to retry, or the error is nonretryable and gets sent

back to the sender.

Retryable errors are those errors that are generally intermittent and another attempt at faxing may go through.

For example, “busy” and “no answer” errors are retryable.

Nonretryable errors are permanent failures when trying to send the fax again is not going to succeed and it is

not an efficient use of phone or processing time attempting the fax again. For example, “no dial tone” and

“number not in service” errors are not retryable.

The Microsoft Fax client manages its own retries. None of the serverside retry settings apply to faxes sent by

Microsoft Fax.

2.6.1.1 Number of Retries
By default, the fax server will retry a fax three times (four attempts total). This can be configured in the

Programs NET SatisFAXtion Change Server Settings. Click

the Fax Hardware Settings button and change to the General tab.

2.6.1.2 Intelligent Retry
“Intelligent Retry” is a method that resumes a partially successful fax from where it left off. If a fax fails

in the middle, on a retry the first page will be resent (usually the cover sheet), and then the remaining

pages will be sent. This prevents resending of successful pages and reduces the call time of the retries.

For example, a 10page fax is sent, and it fails while sending page 7. On a retry, the fax server will send

page 1, then pages 7 through 10. If it fails again on page 9, the fax server will send page 1, then pages

9 through 10.

2.6.1.3 Retry Interval
“Busy” errors are retried after 60 seconds. All other retryable errors are retried after 15 seconds. These

values can be customized with the busy_call_send_retry_seconds and send_retry_seconds respectively,

see 4.2.1.1 ICANFax Global.

2.6.1.4 Which Errors are Retries
In general, all normal “call progress” errors are retryable, such as “busy” and “no answer.” Also all

transmission errors are retryable.

The exact error codes that are retried are driverspecific. See the appropriate section in 4.1 Error Code

Reference for a list of all error codes and whether they are retryable.

2.6.1.5 Customizing Retryable Errors
In some environments, certain errors are actually retryable when normally they are not, and vice versa.

It is possible to reclassify particular error codes as retryable with also_retry_errors, and others as

nonretryable with dont_retry_errors. See 4.2.1.1 ICANFax Global and appropriate section in 4.1 Error

Code Reference for more detail.

2.6.2 Dialing the Same Number More Than Once

By default the fax server will only send one fax to any given number at the same time. Any

additional faxes to that number will queue up in the Scheduled queue until the first fax completes.

This is because most fax numbers are fax machines that can only handle one fax call at a time.

To disable this behavior, allowing the fax server to send more than one fax to a number at the
