following notes provide an outline of the required configuration, but the specific steps on how to
implement this will depend on the DNS and email software being used.
It is strongly recommended that mail for the SMTP Gateway's E­mail domain be routed first through the
mail server, rather than directly from the client to the SMTP Gateway. This funneling of mail takes
advantage of any advanced mail processing features the mail server may have, as well as introducing
the fault tolerance offered by the mail server's store­and­forward function. Many mail servers will need
to be configured to allow relaying for the fax domain.
It is usually sufficient to configure DNS with the following records, assuming the fax server’s IP is
192.168.10.10, and the mail server is mail.company.com. If fax senders will be out on the Internet,
then the IP address must be a public IP.
fax.company.com 3600 IN A 192.168.10.10
fax.company.com 3600 IN MX 10 mail.company.com
2.9.4.2 Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2010 Routing
If your organization uses Exchange as their Mail Transport Agent, it is recommended to configure an
SMTP Connector to route mail messages to the NET SatisFAXtion SMTP Gateway. Alternate methods
(e.g. DNS MX records) will also work, see above for details.
Add a Send Connector to the Hub Transport
Open the Microsoft Exchange Management Console. Expand Organization Configuration. Right­click on
Hub Transport, and choose New Send Connector.
This will launch the New SMTP Send Connector wizard.
Enter the name of this connector. It is recommended to name the connector the same as the address
space this connector will handle.
