Voice Testing with the FrameScope Pro

Megaco/H.248 Voice Testing

The Megaco/H.248 is a media gateway control protocol that
addresses the requirements of decomposed gateways to achieve
scalability and flexibility at lower overall cost. The decomposed
gateways separate the call and media control intelligence from
the packet media processing and transmission. In Megaco/H.248
terms, a Media Gateway Controller (MGC) is the external call
and media control entity that handles the signaling and call
processing intelligence. A Media Gateway (MG) is the network
element that performs media processing and transmission, such
as conversion between audio signals carried on telephone
circuits and data packets carried over the Internet, or over
other packet networks. MGCs use Megaco/H.248 to control MGs
to set up media paths through the distributed network.

The Megaco/H.248 Voice Test supports the following details.

Number of VoIP calls: One VoIP call during a test

Transport: UDP and TCP

This can be configured in the Media Gateway screen. The
default MG Transport is UDP.

Message encoding type: Text and Binary

This can be configured in the Media Gateway screen. The
default Encoding Type is Text.

Audio transport: RTP

Features

Signaling - Decipher the Megaco/H.248 signaling information
to view the call setup process and failures between the MG
and MGC.

Voice Play Mode - Live and PlayBack Mode.

Live Mode - Enable the caller and callee to talk to each
other via a handset and microphone.

PlayBack Mode - Similar to an autoanswering machine,
except it plays the prerecorded WAV audio signal.

Voice Quality Measurement - Decipher the RTP/RTCP
information to understand the root cause of voice quality,
such as jitter, delay, and packet loss. Calculate the R-Factor
and MOS values and display the results.

Logging - Logged results of the tests for review.
