6.12 SHUTTING THE WATER HEATER DOWN FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF
TIME

If the unit is to be taken out of service for an extended period of time (one year or more),
complete the following procedures.

Extended Period Shut-Down

1. Set ON/OFF switch on the front panel to the OFF position to shut down the heater’s operating

controls.

2. Disconnect AC power from the unit.

3. Close the water inlet and outlet valves to isolate the unit.

4. Close the external gas supply valve.

5. Open the P&T relief valve (see Figure 5-9, above) to vent water pressure.

6. Use a strap or clamp to open top vent and drain at the bottom. Keep them open unit is

completely drained of all water, and then remove the strap or clamp.

Note that water left in

the unit may subject the shell and heat exchanger to microbial attack, which could lead
to failure of heat exchanger and/or outer shell.

6.13 PLACING THE HEATER BACK IN SERVICE AFTER A PROLONGED
SHUTDOWN

After a prolonged shutdown (one year or more), the following procedures must be followed:

1. Review installation requirements included in Chapter 2.

2. Inspect all piping and connections to the unit.

3. Inspect exhaust vent, air duct (if applicable).

4. Perform initial startup per Chapter 4.

5. Perform safety device testing and scheduled maintenance procedures per Chapters 5 and 6

of this manual.
