Chapter 1 - 3240S Introduction

1.1 3240S Fiber Optic Multiplexer

The 3240S Fiber Optic Multiplexer is a compact version of the 3240 product line. This multiplexer supports up to eight T1,
eight MDSO, or six E1 channels over single mode or multimode fiber optic links. The chassis of the 3240S can accommodate
two plug-in Interface Module Cards (I/O Cards) where the total available bandwidth is divided into two equal segments, or
time slots. Each I/O card, either T1 or E1, requires one physical card slot while utilizing two logical time slots.

The 3240S is forward and backward compatible with all managed and unmanaged versions of the
3240; however, integration of components from other versions is not recommended. When integration is
required with any of the 3240S predecessors, some modification will be required to accommodate the
older I/O Cards.

Several application options are available:

Redundant links, both fiber and power, and managed or non-managed.

Non-redundant links, managed or non-managed.

Autoranging AC, DC or AC/DC power input.

Any combination of the latter options, (e.g., a managed 3240S with a non-redundant fiber link, and redundant AC power
with DC backup).

Fiber optics options include 1310/1550nm single mode and 850/1310/1550nm multimode.
