Definition for a Subnet address: an extension in an Internet Protocol (IP) address that allows users in
a network to use a single IP network address for multiple physical subnets. The IP address contains
three parts: the network, the subnet, and host addresses. Inside the sub-network, gateways and hosts
divide the local portion of the IP address into subnet address and host address. Outside of the
subnetwork, routing continues as usual by dividing the destination address into a network portion
and a local portion.

4.8.1 IP Address and Subnet Mask for SNMP Agent

To set the IP Address for the SNMP Agent, select '1' from the SNMP Agent Configuration Menu. A new screen will appear
prompting you to enter the IP address for the SNMP Agent. The Internet Protocol (IP) address class defines how the IP is
split between the network ID (identifies the network) and the host ID (identifies the host on that network). This class depends
on the first octet of the address.

First Octet of Agent IP Address

Default Subnet Mask

Class A 1-126

255.0.0.0

Class B * 128-191

255.255.0.0

Class C 192-233

255.255.255.0

*Address 127 is reserved for loopback.

Reference Figure 4-6 which shows the IP Address screens for the SNMP Agent, Subnet Mask, and the Default Gateway.

The subnet mask must have the network portion with its bits set to 1. The host portion may have bits set to 1 to define a
subnetwork. The subnet mask defines a mask that is used to determine which portion of an IP address is the network ID. To
enter a subnet mask, select '2,' then 'Enter' from the SNMP Agent Configuration Screen, as referenced in Figure 4-6.

4.8.2 Default Gateway IP Address

The Agent looks at the destination (or SNMP Manager or Host IP address to see if the destination is on a different network
(subnet mask is used to determine the real network destination). If the network manager is located on a different network, the
IP datagram will be routed to the Default Gateway. To enter the Default Gateway IP Address, select '3,' then 'Enter' from the
SNMP Agent Configuration Screen. Reference Figure 4-6.

Definition of Gateway: 1. In a communications network, a network node equipped for interfacing with
another network that uses different protocols. (188) Note 1: A gateway may contain devices such as
protocol translators, impedance matching devices, rate converters, fault isolators, or signal translators
as necessary to provide system interoperability. It also requires that mutually acceptable administrative
procedures be established between two networks. Note 2: A protocol translation/mapping gateway
interconnects networks with different network protocol technologies by performing the required
protocol conversions. 2. Loosely, a computer configured to perform the tasks of a gateway.
