3240S Fiber Optic Multiplexer

Chapter 3 - 3240S Non-Managed Operation

The 3240S Multiplexer can be used with or without the Network Management (NMS) Module. This section describes how to
set up the 3240S when an SNMP Management Module is not installed. Detailed setup and system checks may be referenced
in Section 2.7, Operation Ready, of Chapter 2.

The 3240S jumper and switch settings are set to a factory default and not necessarily to your system
requirements. Ensure that all setup switches are set correctly before using. This means that all
setup switches and jumpers must be set to the user application requirements, not to management setup
requirements which are normally preset from the factor
y.

3.1 System Setup Switches and Jumpers

This refers to any setup jumpers located on the main circuit board inside the unit, or any switch that is accessible via the rear
panel of the main chassis (not on the I/O cards.

3.1.1 Internal Relay Contact Jumper

The Alarm Relay (also referred to as the Fault Relay) Contact Jumper, W12/W13, selects the Normally Open or Normally
Closed contacts of the Alarm Relay. This is the only customer option on the main board that can be configured by the user.
This jumper is described in Chapter 2, Section 2.2.3, "Alarm (ALM) Relay Jack."

3.1.2 External Chassis Switches

All external chassis switches are located on the bottom of the Rear Panel below the I/O cards.

3.1.2.1 System Mode Switch

This switch should be set to the NORM position for normal operation. This switch must be manually changed to activate a
local or remote system loopback.

3.1.2.2 Master/Slave Switch

With the exception of specialized applications, this switch needs to remain in the MAST position on both multiplexers.

3.1.2.3 Redundant Optics Switch

If installed, this switch should be set to the AUTO position for normal operation. This switch must be manually changed to
force operation onto the Primary (PRI) or Secondary (SEC) links. This switch is also used to select the active link before
switching to the AUTO position and to clear alarms.

3.1.2.4 Primary and Secondary Optical Power Switches

The primary and secondary optical switches are set according to the amount of loss over the optical links. Both switches
under normal conditions should be identically set if redundancy is installed. Likewise, both ends of the link must be set the
same, all LO, or all HI. The factory default setting is LO. Also reference Section 2.2, Fiber Optic Setup, in Chapter 2 for further
details.
