Appendix B - Software Upgrade

There are different ways to upgrade the software on the 3240S management board. An important rule to follow is - units that
are connected together must be upgraded with the same new software in order to insure compatibility.

Software download is a feature that allows new software functionality to be implemented in an easy and fast manner. The
software is resident on the management board in FLASH memory. This type of memory can be erased and reprogrammed, and
does not require any mechanical intervention.

This appendix contains instructions for downloading new software by:

Using the Download Software Diskette - The 3240S management software can be upgraded with a serial port locally
connected to the console port of the management module. Typically, in a point-to-point system, this will only upgrade
the software in the unit connected to the PC. Refer to Section B.1, "Software Upgrade Over a PC Serial Port."

Upgrading the software on a remote 3240S with the software currently running at the local 3240S - The remote 3240S
located at the other side of the fiber link(s) must also be upgraded. This can be done with the user interface as detailed
in Section B.2, "Remote Unit Download."

Upgrading the software using TFTP - A faster way to do a software upgrade is by using TFTP (Trivial File Transfer
Protocol). Refer to Section B.3, "TFTP Software Upgrade."

B.1 Software Upgrade Over a PC Serial Port

A diskette with the Download Software must be copied onto the PC being used for the download operation. Simply follow the
instructions found in the README file on the diskette (the text for the file is provided in this section). Figure B-1 shows the
physical connection required in order to perform a software upgrade with a PC via a serial port.

The proprietary download requires a 386 PC, or higher, with a VGA monitor and COM1 or COM2 serial ports.
