1.2 Managed vs. Non-Managed

If a Management Module is installed, it is assumed that the Network Management System (NMS) software will be used to
control the manageable functions. To utilize the NMS for control, the hardware switches must be preset to the state (AUTO
and NORM) where the software has control over the functions. However, if the user wishes to have the hardware control the
manageable functions in a managed unit, the software must be preset to the non-controlling state (AUTO and NORM via
management screens) before using the hardware to control the function. The hardware must be returned to the non-
controlling position to regain management control. The 3240S Multiplexer Management screens accessible via a terminal
emulation package are used to set up the manageable functions. This setup operation is described in Section 4.

1.3 Unpacking and Installation Preparation

1.3.1 Unpacking the Unit

Each Canoga Perkins multiplexer is factory tested and shipped in a protective carton. After unpacking the multiplexer and its
accessories, be sure to retain the shipping carton and protective packing for reuse in case the unit must be returned to
Canoga Perkins for any reason. To ensure proper operation of the multiplexer, please inspect the unit and its shipping carton
carefully for damage. If damage to the unit has been incurred, file a liability claim immediately with the freight carrier. Canoga
Perkins is not liable for damage in shipment.

Installation of your Canoga Perkins 3240S Fiber Optic Multiplexer should be performed by qualified
personnel only. Incorrect set up may cause damage to the multiplexer or the ancillary equipment.

1.3.2 Unit Placement

The 3240S Fiber Optic Multiplexer can be used as a stand alone or rack mount unit. Mounting brackets are provided for use
in various combinations of rack mounting. Where a large number of multiplexers are to be installed, it is usually best to mount
them in standard 19-inch cabinet racks. For rack mounting, the angle brackets can be positioned in the front, center or rear of
the unit for total mounting flexibility.

1.3.3 AC Power Connections

A rear mounted power switch is provided for controlling AC power. The fuse for AC power is housed in the power switch. AC
power for the 3240S is auto ranging covering a spectrum from 90 to 264VAC.
