7 Managing TRILL

Transparent Interconnect of Lots of Links (TRILL) uses IS-IS to provide transparent Layer 2 forwarding.
TRILL combines the simplicity and flexibility of Layer 2 switching with the stability, scalability, and rapid

convergence capability of Layer 3 routing. All these advantages make TRILL very suitable for large flat
Layer 2 networks in data centers.
Switches implementing TRILL are called "Routing Bridges" (RBs for short). A TRILL network is a Layer 2

network comprised of RBs, as shown in

Figure 17

.

Figure 17 TRILL network

TRILL provides the following advantages:

Ease of configuration.

Fast convergence upon network topology changes.

Improved bandwidth and data forwarding efficiency.
TRILL integrates shortest path first (SPF) with the Layer 3 routing technique Equal Cost Multiple Path

(ECMP) for data forwarding.

Managing a TRILL network with VFM

For RBs to work in a TRILL network, you must enable TRILL on the RBs globally as well as on the RB
interfaces.
VFM enables you to configure TRILL parameters on RBs and the RB interfaces individually or in batches.
