9. Glossary
PROM
Programmable Read-only Memory. PROMs are manufactured as blank chips on which data can be
written with a special device called a PROM Programmer.
RAM
Random Access Memory
RU
Rack Units. A standard measure or size for frames (1.75 inches).
Serial
Control
Used to communicate via multiple serial ports at once.
SMS7000
Competitor’s control system, similar to the NVISION NV9000 or NV910 control system.
TDM
Time Domain Multiplexing. A form of signal management that places incoming signals onto a sin-
gle wire in sequence.
THD
Total harmonic distortion
Time code
An AES signal that is data; contains a time stamp of hours and minutes, usually associated with
film and video frames, established by the SMPTE. Time codes provide a time reference for editing,
synchronization, and identification. The time code is usually a low speed data signal, whose bit rate
(nominally about 2.4 Kbs) and spectral content varies with changes in tape speed.
Unbalanced
signals
Balance is defined in terms of the impedance of the two signal conductors with respect to a refer-
ence, which is usually ground. If these impedances are equal and non-zero, the system is balanced.
If the impedances are unequal (including a signal conductor with a grounded return) the system is
unbalanced.
UniConfig
Application used to configure the NVISION NV9000 or NV915 control system.
VDC
Volts of Direct Current
