Unusual chatter from the
quill (cont’d)

The feed rate and/or spindle
speed require adjustment.

Adjust the feed rate and/or
spindle speed.

The tool diameter is too
small for the depth of cut.

Increase tool diameter or
reduce the depth of the cut.

The tool is not secure in
the tool holder.

Check that the tool is secure
in the tool holder.

The machine’s ram and/or
head is loose.

Tighten the nut(s) on the
ram and/or head as required
by the manufacturer.

The spindle bearings are
worn.

Replace the spindle bearings
as instructed in the milling
machine’s reference manual.

The tool is worn.

Sharpen or replace the tool.

The machine’s head has
been moved and is out of
alignment.

Re-tram the machine’s head.

Re-tram the head and re-tight-
en the four (4) head coupling
nuts to 50 ft/lbs. of torque.

Z-axis engage/disengage
mechansim will not re-
engage ballscrew nut or quill
does not move freely.

The machine’s head is out
of alignment.

Re-tram the machine’s head.

Re-tram the head and re-tight-
en the four (4) head coupling
nuts to 50 ft/lbs. of torque.

The head has been moved
or re-angled.

Poor dimensional accuracy
