6.

Gently invert the sample tube 5 times to ensure complete mixing of the contents.

collection before testing, but no longer than 4 hours. Do not place the sample in a water bath or on

a rocker plate.

NOTE: Re-draw sample if there is evidence of hemolysis or clotting in any other tube that was collected at the

same time.

Indwelling Catheter

Perform the following procedure for sample collection from an indwelling catheter:

NOTE: For an Aspirin or IIb/IIIa Test, whole blood may be collected from venous or arterial sites.

Sample Collection Procedure

Collection of blood sample should be performed with care to avoid hemolysis or contamination by tissue

factors.

1.

Whole blood samples that are obtained from an indwelling catheter should be collected after

sufficient discard (approximately 5 mL) has been drawn to clear the line. Ensure indwelling catheter

is free of clots.

When using a syringe transfer blood to the sample collection tube immediately

after collection.

NOTE: If blood is to be transferred using a needle, the size must be 21 gauge or larger (e.g. 18-20 gauge).

2.

If drawing for a CBC at the same time, fill the CBC tube last to avoid contamination by EDTA.

3.

Fill the sample tube to the black line (Figure 6-1). Do not under fill.

NOTE: Label the sample tube with the patient ID, date, and time it was drawn. Dispose of blood collection supplies

according to your institution’s policy.

4.

Gently invert the tube 5 times to ensure complete mixing of the contents.

5.

Blood must equilibrate at room temperature (18 °C to 25 °C) for a minimum of 10 minutes after

collection before testing, but no longer than 4 hours. Do not place the sample in a water bath or on

a rocker plate.

6.

Blood drawn during the insertion of an IV catheter should not be used.

NOTE: Re-draw sample if there is evidence of hemolysis or clotting in any other tube that was collected at the same

time.
