The spark plug(s)
The spark plug(s) should be checked, cleaned and re-gapped on a monthly basis or every 100 hours of use. The
plugs should be replaced every six months or 300 hours of use.
When checking the spark plug(s), a dry, light colored residue on the plugs is a sign of running lean. If there is a
thick, wet, black residue on the plug the engine is running rich. If either of these conditions are present, it would indi-
cate a problem with the carburetor.
There should be a dry tan coating on the plug(s). this
would indicate the proper mixture.
1. To remove/replace the spark plug(s):
1a. Remove the spark plug wire(s).
See Figure 9.1.
NOTE: Do not use metal pliers on spark plug
wire(s). Damage to the wire can result.
1b. Remove the spark plug(s) with the appropriate
spark plug socket. See Figure 9.2.
1c. Clean the Spark plug(s) with carburetor
cleaner or replace them with the spark plug(s)
suggested by the engine manufacturer.
NOTE: Do not clean the spark plug(s) mechanically
(sand blasting or scraping). This will damage
the insulator.
1d. Gap the electrodes according to the engine
manufacturer’s specifications.
1e. Thread the spark plug(s) into the spark plug
hole(s).
1f. Tighten the spark plug(s) to a torque specified
by the engine manufacturer.
NOTE: Refer to engine manufacturer’s service manual for more detailed instructions.
1g. Push the spark plug wire(s) onto the spark plug(s) until they snap into place.
