11.14 Time Adjustment

11.14.1 Using the Time Adjustment Utility

Time is synchronized on nodes on the network, based on the time found on the node which is the time
master
, the node which is always recognized as having the "correct" time. All other nodes in the console
group will adjust their time to match that of the time master. Time synchronization is critical for correct
system operation.

If it becomes necessary to adjust the system time, adjustments of up to plus or minus 5 minutes can be
performed using the Time Adjustment option on the Utilities menu.

Click on the Time Adjustment option on the Utilities menu to display the Time Adjustment window
(

Figure 11-45

).

The Time Adjustment window displays:

the current system time

the desired target time

a text entry box with slider arrows for specifying the number of seconds in the adjustment

The current and target times are updated each second. The target time is a calculated quantity which is
equal to the system time, modified by the current adjustment slider value.

If you know the number of seconds the time is to be adjusted, the number can by typed directly into the text
entry box. Alternatively, you can use the slider arrows to enter the number of seconds in the adjustment.

NOTE

All Micro-PWC applications assume a monotonic (always
increasing) system time. Manually adjusting the local time on any
node can violate this assumption, and also de-synchronize the
network time. Time adjustments of 5 minutes or less should
always
be performed using the Time Adjustment utility. If a time
adjustment of more than plus or minus 5 minutes is needed, it
should be performed as described in

Section 11.14.2, Adjusting the

Time More than 5 Minutes

.
