10 Acronyms and terms

A/V Conferencing Server—A server that provides Audio or Video conferencing functionality to a group

of users.
Archiving Server—A server that archives IM communications and meeting content.
Edge Server—A server that allows Lync clients to communicate with users outside the firewall.
Lync Server—A Microsoft Unified Communication application. Lync Server applications include Lync

Server 2010 and Lync Server 2013. Lync Server offers video conferencing, desktop or application sharing,

calling, and IM.
Lync Server role—A defined set of Lync Server functionalities provided by that server.
Mean Opinion Score—A score whose value ranges from 1.0 to 5.0. The greater the value, the better the

voice quality.
Mediation Server—A component necessary for implementing Enterprise Voice and Dial-in conferencing.

It translates signaling and media between the internal Lync Server infrastructure and the PSTN network.
Monitoring Server—A server that collects usage information from Lync calls or Video conferencing to

provide the metrics about the quality of media.
MOS—Mean Opinion Score.
Network Quality Analyzer—A tool that measures the network quality.
NQA—Network Quality Analyzer.
QoS—Quality of Service.
Test tunnel—Link between either two network devices. Two network devices on the ends of the link send

NQA test packets to each other for testing and analyzing the link quality and network performance.
UCHM—Unified Communications Health Manager.
Unified Communications Health Manager—An IMC service component which supports:

Monitoring the health of the network for Lync online.

Locating network problems.

Managing Lync resources.

Viewing Lync call history.
