5.6 OPERATIONS

While the performance monitor and event viewer describe the state of the NonStop server environment, the
operations package provides the mechanism to take action quickly and easily and to apply specific commands.

5.6.1 OVERVIEW

A generic internal structure enables definition and integration of in-house applications into the Object Manager,
which then automatically becomes aware of the customized environments. The Object Manager provides a central
tool to manage all subsystems and applications automatically.

A companion to the Object Manager is a subsystem called the Central Command Manager (CCM), which includes a
smart disk, file and spooler interface.

5.6.2 OBJECT MANAGER (Obj Mgr & OCM)

The web-based NonStop Object Managerlets users display status and configuration information for instances of
TANDEM or USER subsystems and objects. It also provides a set of commands for object control (START, STOP,
ABORT, ADD, ALTER, etc.) available for users given control privileges. A separate command-level entry field is
available for issuing TACL commands. Logon, TACL commands, and sensitive button commands can be restricted to
a set of users predetermined by the owner of the Object Manager environment. The object tree can be tailored,
and sets of objects/commands can be loaded through an edit file script.

The Object Manager is capable of:

 Establishing a session by user-id/password. Safeguard aliases are supported
 Setting up an environment where only the owner is permitted logon access
 Allowing an owner to set up a member-group for logon access
 Displaying an object tree as presented by the NonStop-based Operations Console Manager (OCM)
 Displaying current instances for a selected object type
 Displaying a set of applicable command buttons for a selected object
 Providing attribute selection for ADD/ALTER commands
 Displaying the results of a command in a separate frame
 Providing user-configurable objects and commands
 Linking with the EMS event viewer

5.6.2.1 PROCESSING

Object Managerworks on a concept called environments. Object Manager uses the program WCMX for its
operations. Every process instance of the program WCMX is called an environment. This contains the configuration
of objects and user securities. During the usage of Object Manager, by default, Object Manager starts the $OCM
environment. This is needed before any other environment is created. Additionally only the creator of $OCM is
allowed to create additional environments. The $OCM is a shared environment i.e. any user having a valid
Guardian username and password is allowed to logon to Object Manager and use it. Non-shared environments can
also be created and the creator can specify a list of users to whom he/she wants to give access.

Each environment creates and manages a WCMDB file that contains the objects, commands, user etc. information.

If the environment is $OCM then these corresponding files are created in the default subvolume (which is
generally Web ViewPoint subvolume). For any other environment e.g. $ABC, these files are created in the ABCXXX
subvolume.
