Section I: Basic Operations

Here are the general steps to configuring the slave switches of an
enhanced stack:

1. Connect the slave switches to the master switch using a common

VLAN.

2. If you use the Default_VLAN (VID 1) as the common VLAN of the

switches of the stack, you do not need to add a routing interface to it
on the slave switches. However, if you use another VLAN, you must
add a routing interface to it on the slave switches, but you do not need
to designate it as the local interface. (If you do decide to designate an
interface as a local interface on a slave switch, it must be the interface
in the common VLAN. Otherwise, the slave switch will not belong to
the stack.)

3. To remotely manage a slave switch, start the session on the master

switch by specifying the IP address of the local interface on the master
switch and then transition to the slave switch using the enhanced
stacking feature in the AT-S63 management software.

The AT-9408LC/SP, AT-9424T/GB, and AT-9424T/SP switches do not
support Layer 3 routing, but they do allow you to create one interface and
designate it as the local interface to support those management functions
that require an IP address, such as remote management.

The menus interface supports only routing interfaces. To configure static
routes and RIP, you must use the command line interface.

For background information on routing interfaces, static routes, and RIP,
refer to Chapter 32, “Internet Protocol Version 4 Packet Routing,” in the
AT-S63 Management Software Command Line Interface User’s Guide.

Stacking Overview” on page 90. For b
ackground information on virtual
LANs, refer to “VLAN Overview” on page 588.
