4.6 Network Performance

Performance Monitoring (PM) and Service Availability Monitoring (SAM) provide screens for
setting up and testing how well a network is performing. Tracking network performance can help
prevent problems by detecting potential error conditions in time to resolve the problem. To
access the Network Performance screen (Figure 4-11), on the Diagnostics screen, type 6 and
press Enter.

NOTE: If you select 6, Network Performance, and the unit is not licensed for PM, SAM, or PLPM,
access will be denied.

Before you can setup PM, Continuous Performance Monitoring (CPM), or SAM testing, the
Master NID must be licensed to run these tests. Protected Link Performance Monitoring (PLPM)
is a separate feature that allows two 9145E NIDS deployed on a protected link to participate in
PM, CPM and SAM. To determine if your master NID has the required licenses, see the section
“License Manager” on page 165.

If a license state is Enabled, the NID is already licensed. If the state is Disabled, the NID is
not licensed. To obtain a license key, contact Canoga Perkins. Be sure to have the feature name
and 9145E serial number available.
