4.6.14 Continuous Performance Monitoring

Continuous Performance Monitoring (CPM) is provided as an option when both PM and SAM are
licensed on a 9145E NID. CPM combines the monitoring features of PM with the parallel
processing features of SAM for CPM for all or selected circuits. CPM can be used for CP
Proprietary and Y.1731.

4.6.14.1 CPM Overview

PM tests each Test Address with a programmed packets per second (PPS) for a programmed
test duration, computes the result and sends it to CanogaView, and proceeds to the next Test
Address based on the schedule defined. Each Test Address is processed serially (one after
another).

PM sends and receives test packets to a Test Address for a period of time - the Test Duration.
The timestamps in the packets and the count of the packets sent and received are used to
compute a PM Test Result for the Test Duration.

Service Availability Monitor (SAM) tests each Test Address once per programmed seconds per
packet (default 1 sec.) and computes frame loss ratio (FLR) and ultimately availability. Each Test
Address is processed in parallel.

SAM sends and receives test packets to all of the Test Addresses that are SAM capable in
parallel. These packets are identical with those packets sent and received by PM processing.
However, SAM processing does not look at or utilize the timestamps embedded in the packets.

By combining the PM test packets with the parallel testing capabilities of SAM, the NID is able to
perform and record PM Test Results to each remote NID in parallel for the feature named CPM.
This feature does not have any affect on the current PM processing or on the current SAM
processing. Each of these features continue to work independently.
