This option identifies the string necessary for the modem to take the phone off-hook (answer). For
nearly every modem, this string is “ATA” and will not have to be changed from the default value.

After answering a call, the 6000

UPG

can prompt for a password before allowing the caller access.

When entering a password, the user will be prompted to verify the password before it will take
effect. Typing “NONE” at the prompt will remove password protection. If password protection is
enabled, the user will see the following screen upon connection.

After three unsuccessful attempts or after 30 seconds with no input, the 6000

UPG

will hang up.

Otherwise the user will resume where they were when last connected.

NOTE: All sonde activity except for unattended sampling is suspended while the sonde is waiting
for a call.

Entering modem mode:

To enter modem mode, exit out of the menu system and return back to the command line. At the
“#” prompt, type “modem” and hit return. After connecting the 6000

UPG

to the modem, the

6000

UPG

will flash the modem’s DTR indicator light to acknowledge that the modem accepted the

initialization string and is ready to receive incoming connections. If the DTR light does not flash
and you see activity on the modem’s RX (receive) and TX (transmit) indicators, insure that the
modem answers “OK” to the initialization string and that all cables and adapters are firmly
connected.

Exiting modem mode:

To exit out of modem mode, disconnect the 6000

UPG

from the modem, attach it with a YSI 6095

MS-8 to DB-9 field cable adapter to your PC and while holding down the Ctrl key type “X” (Ctrl-
X). At the prompt, Answer “Y” confirming the intention to exit modem mode.
