Glossary of Terms

Acronym for Attached Resource Computer Network, it is one of the oldest
forms of networks. Created in 1977 by Datapoint Corporation, ARCNET uses
token passing in combination with star/bus topology to transmit data at 2.5
Mbps (megabits per second). It is simple, inexpensive and reliable and is a good
solution for small LANs. Cabling may include RG-62, 90-ohm or 93-ohm
coaxial, UTP and fiber optic. It will support as many as 255 nodes.

Abbreviation for Basic Input/Output System. The BIOS insulates application
software from the hardware by providing primitive I/O services and by
programming the hardware's interrupt handling.

A device used to control network traffic. It splits a network segment, passing
data through or rejecting it depending on the destination device's physical
address

Touching along a boundary or a point.

used to describe a local area network that serves more than one purpose, may
network devices physically separated by long distances, and possibly connected
to the internet.

A type of network simple and low-cost, designed to connect industrial devices
as well as control devices. It supports up to 64 devices on a single network at
data rates up to 500 kbaud.

Acronym for Domain Name Server. DNS is the internet naming scheme, which
consists of a sequence of names, separated by dots, from the most specific to the
most general (i.e. www.magnetek.com).

Acronym for Dual Port Random Access Memory I/O Driver. It allows programs
written with the Smart Trac Workstation and downloaded to the Smart Trac
AC1 to set and read parameters on the Smart Trac AC1 using the Smart Trac
AC1's Dual Port RAM.

The most common type of network, ethernet is an open network standard (per
Ethernet 802.3). It was developed by Intel, Digital and Xerox. It is relatively
low-cost yet offers support for a variety of protocols and computer platforms.
Several ethernet cabling standards exist including 10Base-5 (Thick), 10Base-2
(Thin), 10Base-T (twisted pair). All provide data transfer rates of 10 Mpbs.
Variations have been introduced for faster networking, including 10Base-FL (10
Mbps over fiber optic cable), Fast Ethernet (10Mbps or 100 Mbps), 100VG-
AnyLAN (100Mbps) and Switched Ethernet.
