Management Setup and Operation

If you have the optional 9100-M SNMP module installed, you will need to configure your 9135 or 9140 for
the environment in which it will be used. You will need to know the IP address, Gateway address and
Subnet mask that will be assigned to the unit. As detailed in Chapter 4, Section 4.1, there are three methods
you can use to access the management program, two of which come with Windows 95/98 and NT:
HyperTerminal and Telnet.

5.1 Setup

and

Configuration of the Serial Port

Setup of the serial port and VT100 program will depend upon which connection you have chosen for access
to the VT100 terminal program. We suggest that for the initial setup you utilize the terminal port and
HyperTerminal program.

Step 1 Locate the SNMP Management module on the rear panel of the 9135 or 9140 as shown in Figure

5-1. You will see a label with the MAC (Media Access Control) address affixed to the module.
This address is unique to the unit, so make note of it for future reference.

Step 2 Using a straight through serial cable with DE-9 male and female connectors, insert the male end

into the connector marked "Terminal" on the SNMP Management module. Connect the DE-9
female end to the male serial interface on the back of your PC (usually COM1).

Note: Laptops typically have a DE-9 male connector, whereas desktop units may differ.

5.1.1 PC Configuration for Terminal Operation

The following explanation assumes Windows 95/98 is installed and operational. Windows NT screens will
differ slightly. Refer to the appropriate Windows NT manual.

Step 1 Power up your PC. When the main Windows screen displays, click on the Start icon and step

through the menus:

Highlight Programs > Accessories, highlight the HyperTerminal Folder and click on
HyperTerminal.

At this point you should have a "Connection Description" window. See Figure 5-2.
