Situation One: Port 2 Link Active / Port 1 Link Inactive / No Failures
Under normal operating conditions link one shows disabled because the Par LED is lit and Xs have been
applied over the interface connectors. This indicates that Port 1 is in backup mode and inactive, and that
Port 2 is the main link and active. On the physical unit, the Port 1 Par and Lnk LED indicators would be lit
and Port 2 LEDs would reflect a normal situation with Lnk solid, and TX and RX flashing to indicate data
if present. See Figure 5-17.

Situation Two: Port 2 Link Failed and Inactive / Port 1 Link Active / One Fiber Cut
You will note that Link 2 has alarmed and switched over to the Port 1 backup link because of a lack of light
and or idle signals at the receiver as shown by the Lnk LED off. The Par LED on Port 2 is now lit
indicating a switch over from Port 2 to Port 1 has taken place. What precipitated this switch over is that at
the remote end no light is at the receiver and the unit has switched to the backup link. The local unit senses
no receive signal on Port 2 because the remote unit has switched over to Port 1 and now it performs a like
action. The local Rmtf LED is also lit indicating a coded Rmtf signal has been received from the remote
end where the Fiber Lnk LED has been extinguished. Since we can receive the Rmtf signal from the
remote end, either the local transmitter has failed, or there is a single fiber cut between the local transmitter
and the remote receiver. See Figure 5-

.2.1.8

Redundant Mode - SNMP Traps

In each of the latter two scenarios, the units will send out SNMP link traps to any NMS with the correct
privileges. A trap will be generated typical of an SNMP alarm in that it displays the IP address of the
alarming device, time stamps the event, and gives an indication of the nature of the problem.
