. Graphical Depiction of a Spanning Tree Application

.

When the Spanning Tree is enabled, the Switch will monitor the incoming data packets while sending out
Bridge PDUs (Protocol Data Unit) at a user designated time interval. The incoming data packet addresses
are monitored and checked against the forwarding database (Fdb) table by the Spanning Tree entity. If it
sees the same Bridge PDUs incoming on two Ports it will, based on user entered parameters, disable one
Port. This in effect removes the loop.

Note: This is a simplistic discussion of the Spanning Tree algorithm and if the user intends to utilize STP
(Spanning Tree Protocol), we encourage them to review the IEEE 802.1 specifications.
