PRELIMINARY OPERATIONS AND CHECKS BEFORE COMMISSIONING

The first commissioning operations must be performed by specialized technicians.

Unauthorized operations on the engine could lead to the forfeiture of the warranty.

Before commissioning read the enire chapter and the safety instructions again!

The operations described below must be performed on the following occasions :
-

First commissioning after installation

-

After a complete overhaul

-

After extraordinary maintenance operations ( replacement of non-consumable parts)

-

On a set that has remained inactive for long periods (months)

During all the required checks described in the following paragraphs, make sure that the

engine cannot start up accidentally. Set the key-operated selector switch to the “0” position

and make sure the batteries are disconnected ( see the “Batteries” section for the correct

procedure)

COOLING WATER CIRCUIT (for water-cooled engines only)

If necessary, fill up the cooling circuit (for engines with this feature), adding the correct

quantity of antifreeze fluid to the water according to the instructions contained in the

relevant engine documentation.

When filling up with cooling water for the first time, open the air bleed valves found on

the engine until all the air has been bled from the circuit. Fill the circuit (engine and

radiator) slowly to prevent the formation of air pockets.

Check the circuit carefully to make sure there are no leaks anywhere.

After running the system for a short while, check to see whether the water level in the

radiator has dropped, since air pockets may have remained in the system during the first

fill-up. Top up with water as necessary.

LUBRICATING OIL CIRCUIT

The engine comes fully charged with oil; if you need to change the oil proceed as follows:

As regards the type of oil used, which depends also on the ambient temperature, and

the amount of oil needed by the engine, refer to the instructions provided in the relevant
engine documentation.

Drain any previous oil residues from the sump.

Make sure the filters are clean; if necessary, replace the filters together with the related

gaskets.

Fill the lubricating oil sump up to the top notch on the dipstick, without exceeding it.

While the engine is still cool after running for a short while, check the oil level again and

top up as needed.

Check the circuit carefully to make sure that there are no leaks anywhere.

Protect the environment. Dispose of used oil and any rags soaked with oil in compliance with

the regulations in force!
