water under examination. A replacement wiper is supplied with the probes, along with the small
hex driver required for its removal and reinstallation. Follow the instructions supplied with the
probe to ensure proper installation of the new wiper assembly. Additional wipers and pads are
available from YSI.

10-4. Short-term Storage

Proper storage of a sonde between periods of usage will not only extend the life of the sensors, but
will also ensure that the unit will be ready to use as quickly as possible in your next deployment.
The key for short-term storage is to use a minimal amount of water so that the air in the chamber
remains at 100% humidity. No matter what sensors are installed in the instrument, it is important to
keep them moist without actually immersing them in liquid. Complete immersion in liquid could
cause drift or result in a shorter lifetime of a sensor.

Place approximately 1/2 inch of water in the calibration and/or storage cup that was supplied with
the instrument and place the ADV6600 with all of the probes installed into the cup. The use of a
moist sponge instead of water is also acceptable, as long as its presence does not compromise the
attachment of the calibration cup to the ADV6600. The calibration cup should be sealed to prevent
evaporation. Any type of water can be used: Distilled, deionized, or tap water. If the storage water
is inadvertently lost during field sampling studies, environmental water can be used temporarily to
provide the humidity. Be sure to check the vessel periodically to make certain that water is still
present.

10-5. Long-term Storage

10-5.1. ADV6600

Because batteries can degrade over time and release battery fluid, it is extremely important to
remove the batteries from the ADV6600 prior to long term storage. Failure to remove batteries can
result in corrosive damage to the battery terminals if the batteries happen to leak.

10-5.2. ADV

No special precautions are required. Sensor can be stored dry or wet, as long as solutions in contact
with the probe are not corrosive (for example, chlorine bleach). Care must be taken not to point-
impact the transducers (i.e. do NOT use ADV probe arms as a stand for the ADV6600). Also, care
must be taken to avoid bending or otherwise changing the angle of attack of the transducers as this
can result in leakage and/or changes in calibration (requiring the probe to be sent back to the
factory).
